Jeffrey Eugenides

Recently I read a short story by Jeffrey Eugenides in The New Yorker. For anyone who has read Middlesex or The Virgin Suicides, you’ll notice it seems different from his novels. It could be the length and space with which he has to work, but it also seems like the content and language are different. Granted, in Middlesex, the narrator’s voice sounds like Homer in parts (as he/she notes on the first or second page). Possibly, the difference is he  takes the story out of Michigan and places it in Chicago.  I can’t quite put my finger on it.  Anyway, check it out. I hope he has a novel coming out soon. If you haven’t read his novels, do. Now.

Obama Interview

Here is an interview with Obama after his July 1 speech. His plan for the Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives seems kind of iffy, to say the least. There’s also a link to his speech transcript in the first paragraph of the interview.

The DNC is coming up. I’ve heard of people renting out their apartments for outrageous sums. Seems like more effort than it’s worth, though. Our apartment still isn’t completely settled, so I can’t imagine moving out just for some extra cash. I’m excited to see how Denver transforms for the DNC. Glad I won’t commuting by that time.
